Hollow New Jersey Black Duck. Unidentified Maker, ca 1900. Typical as a well-hunted over decoy; old working repaint; painted eyes.

Mallard Drake from the Midwest (possible Ohio origin) by an Unidentified Carver. Made circa 1880-1920. Solid body construction, head set low to body, glass eyes. This handsome mallard shows his years of service by the wear, dings, and shot marks evident on the beautifully applied original paint. The series of original painted dots and squiggles on the back and the distinctive way the underside of the cheek was sculpted are reminiscent of some Dodge decoys as well as some Ohio hunting club birds.

Goldeneye Drake by member of the Nickerson Family, Cape Cod, MA. Ca 1900-20. Solid body with inset wood tail (designed for easy repair) and relief-carved wings; wood head. Very old, thin dry paint overall; some later thin white added. No visible repairs; chip under bill and black paint drip down right wing.

Maine Eider drake. Unidentified Maker. ca 1920s-30s. Solid body with working repaint. Carved wing relief; no eyes. Old chip lost from under bill.

They were part of a collection of ducks and swans displayed by my Aunt Mildred at her southern New Jersey farm house. My Quaker aunt was a design consultant for a large Philadelphia department store and had an eye for primitive art and furnishings."

Black Duck by John Sharon (b 1921) Oregon, Ohio. Circa mid-twentieth century. Cork body with high set wood head; really good original condition and paint; all original rigging (keel and line attached). Glass eyes. Sharon hunted the treacherous mud flats far out in the Maumee Bay. He was a layout shooter and his personal rig had over 100 diving duck decoys.

Swimming Brant by Unidentified Prince Edward Island Maker. Pre 1900. Solid body; two-piece head and neck; no eyes. This kenetic bird has very good body condition -- worn, mostly original, paint with some working touch up. Carved over a century ago. Size: 16.75"l x 7.25"h.

Contemporary Old Squaw by David A. Kaufman, East Weymouth, MA
Made 2007. Signed. Excellent body condition and original paint. Stylized carving. Head looking upward toward the sky; tack eyes. Kaufman worked the body with hearts carved to accentuate the stylized feathers on the prominent back.

This diminutive decoy is solid-bodied with repaint, with an inletted cast lead weight on the bottom. He is a small and appealing bird with a delightful small paddle tail; in good condition; paint wear to end of tail.

Hollow Pintail drake by Unidentified Maker. Illinois River. Ca 1920s-30s. This elegant two-piece hollow bodied decoy is in very fine condition with elaborate feather painting on the back. Subtle fine old paint with crazing in some areas. Glass eyes. Original lead strip weight. Bill restored; chip under tail reglued.

Late 19th century Red-Breasted Merganser. Unidentified Maker. A fine old primitive decoy with a strong sculptural aspect. Coloring is rich and warm showing some traces of old paint; wonderful patina to the wood; lots of weathered detail...really classic folk appeal. The head is attached in the traditional manner with a long iron spike; head positionable to the left and right but is quite secure. Overall it is in excellent OLD used condition.
