Mallard Drake - Lake Erie Area - SOLD
Mallard Drake from the Midwest (possible Ohio origin) by an Unidentified Carver.
Made circa 1880-1920. Solid body construction, head set low to body, glass eyes.
This handsome mallard shows his years of service by the wear, dings, and shot marks
evident on the beautifully applied original paint. The series of original painted dots and squiggles on the back and the distinctive way the underside of the cheek was sculpted are reminiscent of some Dodge decoys as well as some Ohio hunting club birds.

remember in the 1950s. They were part of a collection of ducks
and swans displayed by my Aunt Mildred at her southern New Jersey
farm house. My Quaker aunt was a design consultant for a large
Philadelphia department store and had an eye for primitive art and
furnishings."

Black Duck by John Sharon (b 1921) Oregon, Ohio. Circa mid-twentieth century.
Cork body with high set wood head; really good original condition and paint;
all original rigging (keel and line attached). Glass eyes. Sharon hunted the
treacherous mud flats far out in the Maumee Bay. He was a layout shooter and
his personal rig had over 100 diving duck decoys.

Late 19th century Red-Breasted Merganser. Unidentified Maker.
A fine old primitive decoy with a strong sculptural aspect. Coloring
is rich and warm showing some traces of old paint; wonderful patina to
the wood; lots of weathered detail...really classic folk appeal.
The head is attached in the traditional manner with a long iron spike;
head positionable to the left and right but is quite secure. Overall
it is in excellent OLD used condition.
